Public Service Announcement: The GRE
IMPORTANT RETRACTION: Disregard the entry below. I found out today in my measurement class that the version still being administered is the same computerized adaptive version they've been using since October 2002. Repeat: The GRE is still a computerized adaptive test. The new version (maybe more later on what the changes are supposed to be, if I'm ever not exhausted) won't come out until October 2006. My apologies to anyone who was inconvenienced by the erroneous information below.

I learned today in my ed/psych measurement course that Educational Testing Service has pulled the computerized adaptive version of the Graduate Record Exam (more commonly known as the GRE). Apparently, continuing to administer the adaptive form was simply too expensive. The GRE currently being given is a linear computerized test, which means that it is essentially the old paper and pencil form, presented on a computer. I don't know whether this means that examinees are allowed to review items or skip ahead like you can with a paper and pencil test; I'm sure this is covered on the ETS website.
I was - and still am - so disappointed! Computerized adaptive testing is easily the coolest thing since sliced bread, and it is sad that ETS couldn't keep utilizing it for the GRE.
